Sunny Leone (born Karen Malhotra on May 13, 1981) is an award winning Indo-American pornographic actress and former Penthouse Pet of the Year. She is a Vivid Girl and one of the few actresses of Indian origin in the pornography industry. She has said that Sunny is her real name and Leone was picked by Bob Guccioni, former owner of Penthouse magazine^[5]

Early Life

Sunny was born in Canada to a Punjabi^[6] Sikh family. Her parents came from India about 25 years ago and applied for American citizenship before she was born. Leone's father was born in Tibet and raised in New Delhi, while her mother (who passed away in 2008^[7]) was from a small town called Nahan in Himachal Pradesh^[8]. As a young girl, she was very athletic and played street hockey with the boys,^[1] enjoyed ice skating on a nearby frozen lake and drinking hot chocolate in front of a fire after playing in the snow all day.^[9] When she was 15, her family received their green card and moved to California.^[8] She graduated from high school in 1999 and proceeded to enroll in college.

Career

While studying to be a pediatric nurse in Orange County, a classmate who was an exotic dancer introduced her to John Stevens, an agent who in turn introduced her to Jay Allen, a photographer for Penthouse magazine.^[8] Then in 2001, Sunny was named Penthouse Pet of the Month for the March issue, followed by a feature in the Holiday 2001 edition of Hustler magazine as a Hustler Honey. She has graced the pages of other magazines including Cheri, Mystique, High Society, Swank, AVN Online, Leg World, Club International and Low Rider. In 2003, she was declared the Penthouse Pet of the Year and also stared in the video Penthouse Pets in Paradise. In addition to her print work,she had also done pantyhose modelling with Ed Fox and Playtime Videos.In 2005 Adam & Eve appointed her as their West Coast Internet Sales Representative.^[10]

That same year, Sunny signed a 3 year contract with Vivid Entertainment with which she transitioned into the world of hardcore pornography, stating that she would only do lesbian scenes.^[1] She is the first Vivid Girl of Indian descent.^[11] Her first movie released was titled Sunny^[12] and was released in December 2005. Her next movie Virtual Vivid Girl Sunny Leone was the first interactive title for Sunny had the honor of being the first Vivid Girl to make such a movie.^[13] Taking only four days to film,^[14] the movie won her first AVN award (Best Interactive DVD) and has sold 15,000^[15] copies to date. She followed this with Sunny loves Cher, which featured her first on-screen female ejaculation.

2007 was an important year for Sunny and her career, starting with the January release of The Female Gardner where she stared alongside Daisy Marie and Mikyla. In March she performed a scene in the highly anticipated remake of Debbie Does Dallas Again...., with Lacie Heart as a cheerleader named Christie. Sunny's last two movies under her contract with Vivid were Its Sunny in Brazil, where she was flown to Brazil to shoot her scenes.^[16] and The Sunny Experiement also staring Monique Alexander and Bree Olson.^[17] The movies were released in October and December 2007 respectively.

In May 2007, upon re-signing her contract with Vivid for another 6 films, Sunny agreed to perform for the first time with men on camera, but only exclusively with her fiance, Matt Erikson^[18]. That summer she also received breast augmentation (350 ccs of saline in each breast^[3]) and shot her first movie under the new contract titled Sunny Loves Matt. The highly anticipated movie was released in March 2008 and debuted in the top 10 on many adult DVD charts.

In January 2008, she revealed that she was no longer engaged to Erikson and had done scenes with other actors, most notably Tommy Gunn and Voodoo.^[19] The movies that have been filmed but yet to be released as of August 2008 are Sunny Extreme, The Other Side of Sunny,^[20] Sunny's Dream and Vivid Red.^[21]

In addition to appearing in their movies, Sunny has also been part of the Vivid Comedy Tour^[22] as well as modelling for the Vivid Footwear collection ^[23]. Sunny has also participated in events like the Vivid/Club Jenna Lingerie Bowl^[24] and Vivid's Hot Rod Night.^[25] Doc Johnson launched a pocket pal in 2006 molded to her exact anatomical figure. In addition to her movie career, Sunny is also active on the club circuit and has been the featured dancer at Clubs like The Spearmint Rhino and The Rockstar Lounge.

In March 2008, she was the Danni.com girl of the month. She is currently represented by LA Direct Models.

Mainstream appearances

Sunny's first mainstream appearance was in 2005 when she was a red carpet reporter for the MTV Awards on MTV India. She has also had a cameo in the film The Girl Next Door, performed in Ja Rule's video "Livin It Up" and a video for Kidd Skilly.^[26] Other credits include E!'s "Wild On!" and the Sundance Film Festival's 'After Dark.'^[27]

In addition to filming her scene for Debbie Does Dallas in 2007, Sunny was also part of a Showtime documentary of the same name detailing the production of the movie and the personal lives of its stars.

She has had three appearances on The Howard Stern show, most recently in 2008, where she appeared alongside Joanna Angel and rode a sybian.

In 2008, Sunny announced that she would be starring in a mainstream action adventure movie titled Pirates which was shot in Oman. The shooting was completed in two weeks and was to be released in Summer 2008.^[28]

In 2004 , she was part of "No More Bush Girls", where, along with several other popular adult actresses, they shaved off their pubic hair in protest of the Bush presidency.^[29] In May 2008, she shot a promotional video for Declare Yourself -a nonprofit, nonpartisan voter registration campaign targeting 18-to-29-year-olds.^[30]

In 2005, she was mentioned in Forbes magazine for a story on Vivid Entertainment^[31]

Sunny was a contestant in the second season of the Fox reality show "My Bare Lady 2: Open For Business", where a group of adult actresses were given classes and training on how to pitch investment ideas and see how successful they were in the business world^[32].

In 2007 along with the other Vivid Girls, she was seen in a 48' high holiday Billboard in Times Square at W. 48th Street and Seventh Avenue.^[33].Sunny was also one of the Penthouse pets who appear in the Play Station Portable game Pocket Pool

She was also featured in a coffee book titled Naked Ambition: An R-rated Look at an X-rated Industry by Micheal Grecco.^[34]

She has indicated that for the right price, she would seriously consider a career in Bollywood, and has been courted by Indian directors in the past, but has felt uncomfortable with the roles that she would have played^[35][5]

Personal life

Before working in the entertainment industry, she first worked at a German bakery ^[14] and later a tax and retirement firm.^[36] In June 2006, Leone became an American citizen^[14] but has plans to be a dual citizen of Canada.^[37] Though bisexual, she has stated that she prefers men. In her spare time she is into abstract paintings, horse riding, reading and playing World of Warcraft.^[38] She currently plays on a women's soccer league team in California.^[1]

In separate interviews, she has stated that in ten years time she would like to be married and have started a family, and probably retire from the business by the time she is 30.^[37] Sunny was engaged to Matt Erikson, a vice-president of marketing at Playboy Enterprises^[6], but broke up in 2008. She has since then been romantically linked to musician David Navarro,^[39] though those reports are unsubstantiated. She currently resides in Sacramento with her cat.
