Early career
Coyle recorded a demo CD which was distributed to Louis Walsh (now an ex-manager of Girls Aloud) and The Late Late Show. This included the songs "Fields of Gold", "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", "Love Is", and "Summertime".2 In 2001, while attending Thornhill College, Derry, Coyle entered the Irish version of the talent show Popstars.23 As one of the winners of the show, Coyle was selected to become a member of the group Six.23 However, she could not join the group because she was underage. She then returned to her secondary grammar school, Thornhill College.23 In 2002 Nadine was encouraged by judge Louis Walsh to enter a similar competition to the Irish Popstars called Popstars the rivals Nadine did so, landing her a place in the live shows were she had to sing for a place in a girl-band. It was there that Nadine's vocals impressed judges Pete Waterman, Geri Halliwell and Louis Walsh. Nadine thus landed herself a place in the final line up which went on to be known as Girls Aloud
Nadine Coyle is the only person who has ever won two Idol shows.
The group's debut single Sound of the Underground peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the 2002 Christmas number one.[22] Girls Aloud hold the record for the shortest time between formation and reaching number one. Since 2003, Girls Aloud have released twenty additional singles, with all but one charting within the top ten. Their singles I'll Stand by You, Walk This Way, and The Promise have charted at number one. "The Promise" won Best British Single at the 2009 BRIT Awards.[3] Their greatest hits album The Sound of Girls Aloud and 2008's Out of Control entered the UK Albums Chart at number one, with over one million copies of the former being sold.
In 2009, it was announced that Girls Aloud would partake in a year-long hiatus to pursue solo projects, but would reunite for a new studio album in 2010
While with the band Nadine has co-wrote some of the below songs.
- "100 Different Ways" (What Will the Neighbours Say?)
- "Why Do It" (B-side to I Think We're Alone Now)
- "Sexy! No No No..."
Solo work
Coyle filmed a cameo appearance in Natasha Bedingfield's video for "I Wanna Have Your Babies" in Los Angeles, California, United States.4 In 2007, Coyle and the other members of Girls Aloud made a cameo appearance as schoolgirls in the film St. Trinian's. The theme song of the official movie soundtrack that she recorded with her bandmates reached number 51 in the UK charts. Coyle also appeared on Keith Barry's show The Great Escape, which aired on ITV on 29 December 2007.5
She was reportedly approached by Gillette to advertise their female range of razors.6
During the Girls Aloud 2009-2010 break, Nadine plans to release a solo album consisting of original material. She is currently in talks with major record companies in the US and the UK for an album release aimed at early 2010. During an Interview on the Late Late Show in her native Ireland, Nadine told presenter Pat Kenny that as a result of her publishing deal with EMI she had written and recorded a lot of new material that was very different from the Girls Aloud sound.citation needed
She recorded a B side demo duet with Boyz II Men for their album Love, a cover of the Take That track Back for Good. Coyle had also recorded a track with Jay Sean for his album All or Nothing. The track did not make the album as it was not finished due to Coyle and Sean's schedules clashing. Coyle may finish the track and include it on her upcoming solo album. Nadine will also duet with Boyzone on their tv special, to be aired late March 2010
Coyle recorded with producers Mike Elizondo , Toby Gad, Guy Chambers, Steve Booker, Desmond Child and Tony Kanal. She has written some of her own material and is set to release her first single in March.
According to a March 2010 HitQuarters interview with producer-songwriter Steve Booker, Coyle had worked on song ideas in Los Angeles using GarageBand which she then presented to Booker in England to work on together further.7 The producer said, "She was singing her songs to loops, and then I took the loops out and rewrote the music from scratch to her ideas."7 He described her fledgeling songs as "very pop".7 Booker also gave Coyle a couple of his songs to sing, "Because she’s got such a belting voice, I tried a couple of things where she could really belt," he said.7
Coyle has recently reported through her Twitter account a number of additional writers contributing to her solo album including Lucie Silvas, Kyle Cook from american rock band Matchbox Twenty and producer J Remy, who has worked on the Jay Sean album All Or Nothing Arnthor Birgisson who most recently worked with Leona Lewis on her album Echo is also another new contributor to Nadine's album. William Orbit has been in talks with her about working on some tracks for the upcoming album. Dj, Alternative and Dance producer Tiesto has been in the studio with Her too.
In December 2009, Coyle visited her hometown of Derry to successfully break the record of the most trees planted in one site in an hour by 100 volunteers. Her boyfriend Jason Bell accompanied her. Nadine has also dedicated some of her time to charities, most recently the Northern Ireland children’s hospice.
Coyle's manager Bruce Garfield put a statement out in January 2010 stating that her record deal, release date, tv special and live shows will be announced very soon. He also has stated that Nadine has recorded over 40 songs.
Personal life
Previously, Coyle had dated footballer Neil McCafferty from 2000 to 2004 and split up due to busy schedules. In 2006 she also dated American actor Jesse Metcalfe. She has been dating american footballer Jason Bell since September 2008. In 2002 upon the establishment of Girls Aloud she moved to the United Kingdom, then in 2007 she decided to live permanently in Los Angeles and currently resides there.8
